HHS appoints Jennifer Wendel as Permanent CIO

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced on its website that Jennifer Wendel had been appointed as its permanent chief information officer (CIO) on November 18,

Wendel, who has been CIO for about a year, loses the acting part of her position in the change.

When Karl Mathias departed to take a position as a program manager for NASA in December 2023, HHS appointed Wendel as the acting CIO. Jennifer was HHS’s deputy CIO from January 2023 until December 2023 before being appointed CIO.

Wendel leads and manages the IT infrastructure and security operations for more than 83,000 employees, according to HHS.

She oversees the development and implementation of IT policies, oversees high-priority initiatives, and plans strategic IT investments for HHS as the head of the Office of the Chief Information Officer. In addition to leading and supervising the department’s over $9.5 billion IT portfolio as CIO, Jennifer supports the department’s broad mission to improve Americans’ health and well-being.

In 1996, Wendel began working for the FBI as a scientist, handling forensic DNA cases, analyzing DNA profiles, reporting findings, and providing court testimony as a DNA expert.

Wendel worked in a variety of IT positions during her nearly three decades at the FBI before rising to the position of acting DCIO in March 2020.

She guided executive thought leadership in IT services, cybersecurity, and governance while assisting the CIO in making strategic decisions about technological improvements. She also offered important perspectives on technical administration, such as frameworks for risk management, innovation, corporate licenses, budgeting, and policy.
