Cellphone outage in Denmark disrupts several areas and affects emergency services

Significant outages on Thursday in one of Denmark’s biggest cellular networks prevented people from calling emergency services, compelled at least one hospital to cut back on non-essential medical care, and led security forces in some areas to search the streets for individuals in need of assistance.

In a press release Thursday afternoon, TDC Net, the network provider, stated that they had no reason to suspect that the outages were the result of cyberattacks and that the issues were most likely caused by an update that had been implemented within the last 24 hours.

Signaling problems also caused delays for buses and trains in several areas of the nation, resulting in commotion in terminals and passengers stranded on trains, according to Danish media.

A division of the Danish Defense Intelligence Service and Denmark’s national IT security body, the Centre for Cyber Security, were unable to verify whether the two instances were connected.

On Thursday night, TDC Net announced that it had fixed the issue, enabling users to make calls, but with lower sound quality. Customers who must use 112, Europe’s emergency number, were advised by the business to take their SIM card out of their phone before making the call.
