On Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged the nation’s police forces to embrace the “SMART policing mantra,” which expands the acronym “SMART” to include “strategic, meticulous, adaptable, reliable, and transparent.”
Speaking at the closing session of the 59th All-India Conference of Director Generals of Police/Inspector Generals of Police (DGPs/IGPs) in Bhubaneswar, which he attended on Saturday and Sunday, Modi expressed concern about the threats posed by cybercrimes, digital frauds, and artificial intelligence (AI), specifically the potential for deepfakes to sabotage social and family relationships. He also urged the police force to turn the AI challenge into an opportunity by utilizing India’s dual “AI” power of artificial intelligence and “aspirational India.”
The prime minister expressed pleasure with the counterstrategies that arose from the conference’s extensive talks on the national and international aspects of security concerns.
Modi expressed his gratitude for the urban policing measures and suggested their compilation and application in 100 cities across the nation. He recommended that the police station be the main place for allocating resources and advocated for the use of technology to lessen the workload of the constabulary.
Modi urged the security establishment, from the ministry to the police station level, to honor Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 150th birthday next year by resolving to set and accomplish a goal on any aspect that stands to improve the police’s image, professionalism, and capabilities. He did this in recognition of the contributions Patel, India’s first home minister, made to the Ministry of Home Affairs. He called on police forces to embrace the ‘Viksit Bharat’ agenda and modernize.
In-depth talks on issues pertaining to national security, such as counterterrorism, left-wing extremism, cybercrime, economic security, immigration, coastal security, and drug trafficking, took place during the course of the three-day conference. Trends in urban policing and new security issues near the Bangladeshi and Myanmar borders were also discussed. Additionally, a study of the neighborhood’s security condition as well as the application of recently passed criminal legislation, initiatives, and best practices in police was conducted.
