Facebook’s parent company, Meta, announced on Wednesday that it would invest $10 billion to build the largest data center in the world for artificial intelligence in Louisiana.
Richland Parish’s hyperscaler data center is built to handle massive volumes of data needed to maintain digital infrastructure, especially tasks related to artificial intelligence.
The move follows Meta’s announcement the day before that it was looking for nuclear power providers to submit ideas in order to assist in reaching its AI and environmental goals. Meta also stated that it planned to install 1 to 4 gigawatts of new nuclear generation capacity in the United States beginning in the early 2030s.
Big IT businesses like Amazon and Microsoft have seen a sharp increase in their energy demands due to AI computing, which has rekindled interest in nuclear power.
But because of an aging reactor fleet, an overworked U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, possible supply issues with uranium fuel, and local resistance, it will be difficult to quickly meet the rising demand for electricity using only nuclear energy.
The IT company will partner with utility Entergy to use renewable energy to offset the amount of electricity needed by the Meta data center in Louisiana.
Entergy has two nuclear power stations in Louisiana and supplies electricity to portions of Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas.
Legislators already approved the utility’s transmission and generating investments to supply Amazon’s future cloud services center in Mississippi.
Site work for the Louisiana data center will start in December, and Meta anticipates that development will continue until 2030.
