Proficiency in AI, machine learning, cloud computing, and computer science can provide students with limitless prospects in the quickly changing digital landscape of today. But not everyone can readily pick up these highly sought-after, career-boosting abilities.
Our mission at Amazon Web Services (AWS) is to level the playing field in education by guaranteeing that students from marginalized and underrepresented areas have equitable access to life-changing educational opportunities. As part of the AWS Education Equity Initiative, AWS is providing up to $100 million in cloud credits over the next five years to assist eligible educational institutions worldwide in developing or expanding digital learning solutions.
Recipients of this new program will receive cloud credits, which are effectively cash that businesses may use to defray the price of using AWS’s cloud services. After that, recipients can use AWS’s extensive portfolio of cloud computing and cutting-edge AI services to develop innovations like chatbots, mobile apps, student learning platforms, coding curricula, AI assistants, and other technology-based learning experiences. Additionally, they may get technical knowledge from AWS Solution Architects, who will offer continuous optimization assistance, best practices for ethical AI adoption, and architectural guidance.
Bringing digital learning technologies to underserved communities
With the help of AWS, more than 50 organizations from ten countries are already able to leverage cutting-edge technology to provide underrepresented and underserved groups with digital learning solutions. Among the examples are:
- AWS’s cloud credits will be used to scale an AI teaching assistant for Code.org, a nonprofit organization that focuses on supporting young women and students from underrepresented groups by offering computer science and AI education for K–12 schools. Teachers have already seen a 50% reduction in the amount of time they spend grading students’ coding assignments because of this innovation. Increased productivity gives teachers more time to coach pupils and create individualized lesson plans. Amazon Bedrock, AWS’s fully managed service for developing and scaling generative AI ideas, powers Code.org’s AI Teaching Assistant.
- Rocket Learning, a nonprofit organization based in India that helps underprivileged kids get better early childhood education, will expand a project that uses Amazon Q in AWS QuickSight, a generative business intelligence service, to examine trends and the efficacy of video and WhatsApp-based content sent to parents and teachers. By accounting for linguistic and cultural variances, this study aids in content optimization to improve learning outcomes for kids in various geographical areas.

Tangible Africa, a nonprofit organization that teaches coding to kids in South Africa, plans to expand its offline coding curriculum developed on AWS to include 120 teachers and 10,000 students in Ghana, Kenya, Uganda, and Zambia.
Unlocking education and career opportunities
Amazon and AWS have a long history of empowering underprivileged students to access education and professional opportunities, which is furthered via the AWS Education Equity Initiative. Through Amazon Future Engineer, a childhood-to-career initiative aimed at expanding access to computer science education for students from underrepresented and underserved groups, and other Amazon education programs, over 2 million students have received over 17 million hours of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), literacy, and career development courses in the last year. About 6,000 students have received $28 million in scholarships from AWS’s AI and ML Scholarship Program to help them get ready for careers in AI.
AWS will be able to assist governments, social entrepreneurs, education technology companies, nonprofits, and corporate social responsibility teams in increasing access to learning and development opportunities for underserved and underrepresented communities with the addition of the AWS Education Equity Initiative.
