Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) announced that Dr. James Thompson would retire on February 3, 2025, and that Dr. Baaziz Achour will take over as Chief Technology Officer of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. At the moment, Dr. Achour is the Deputy Chief Technology Officer.
“As CTO, Baaziz will lead Qualcomm’s R&D and engineering organisations, with responsibility for our technology strategy and execution. Baaziz will continue to extend Qualcomm’s leadership in wireless communications, computing and AI. I look forward to partnering with Baaziz in his new role,” said Cristiano Amon, President and CEO of Qualcomm Incorporated. “I want to thank Jim for his 33 years of considerable contributions to Qualcomm. During his time as CTO, Jim not only advanced Qualcomm’s wireless technology leadership but also expanded our capabilities, including in advanced processors and AI. Jim has played a key role in creating one of the industry’s broadest technology portfolios, which has been instrumental to our leadership in mobile, and growth and diversification into Automotive, PC, Industrial, XR, networking and more.”
Since 2023, Dr. Achour has held the position of Deputy Chief Technology Officer. In 1993, he began working at Qualcomm as a Systems Engineer. Dr. Achour has been instrumental in the development of almost every generation of wireless technology throughout his time with Qualcomm, holding a number of key positions within the engineering organization.
He will spearhead the cellular evolution to 6G and was a crucial member of the leadership team that made it possible for 5G to launch more quickly. Dr. Achour has a master’s and doctoral degree in electrical engineering from Tufts University, as well as a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Algiers. In wireless communications, he holds 24 U.S. patents that have been approved.
