Gujarat government creates an AI taskforce to promote tech-driven governance development

The state government on Monday announced the creation of an AI task force to supervise the implementation of AI for “technology-driven governance and socio-economic development,” just days after passing a resolution for the strategic use of AI in governance.

According to the government, the task force would consist of 10 members, including directors from Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), as well as five specialists from a variety of sectors. It will be led by the senior secretary of the science and technology department.”The deployment of artificial intelligence is essential to ensure citizens receive benefits of schemes and services effectively and swiftly, utilising technology to its fullest,” a govt statement said.

Microsoft and the state government recently inked a Memorandum of Understanding to create an AI Center of Excellence in GIFT City. This center will organize pilot projects, roll out successful pilots, perform different training programs, and use important technologies including machine learning, cognitive services, and bot services. By providing residents with efficient, timely services and encouraging innovation at the local level, it will benefit government and business in many ways and boost technical growth in areas like manufacturing, healthcare, and education.

The task force will first operate for a year before undergoing an annual review to expand its area of work and operations and integrate any required modifications, according to the statement.

In addition to senior experts from the India AI Mission, the task force will include representatives from the Directorate of ICT and e-Governance, the director of IIT Gandhinagar, the director of IIIT, the National Informatics Center (NIC), the Center for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), NVIDIA, and the Indian Software Products Industry Round Table (ISPIRT).
