Devotees attending the next Mahakumbh in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, the Rajasthan Police have issued an advice warning them to exercise caution when using social media sites and to avoid becoming victims of cybercriminals.
In order to avoid being duped by cybercriminals, devotees are recommended to make reservations exclusively through official means, such as phone numbers and websites supplied by the state government.
These crooks employ phony links and websites to take advantage of reservations at hotels, dharamshalas, and guest houses.
According to Director General of Police (Cyber Crime) Hemant Priyadarshi, the Mahakumbh 2025 will start on January 13 at Prayagraj’s Sangam city.
Cybercriminals are targeting the festival since internet reservations for hotels, Dharamshala, and guest homes have already started, and millions of devotees are anticipated over the 45-day event.
“Cyber criminals are using fake websites and links to trick devotees into paying for accommodations such as hotels, Dharamshala, guest houses, and tent cities at lower-than-usual rates. These fraudsters collect advance payments without providing any actual booking. The online booking of hotels, Dharamshala and cottages of hotels, guest houses and tent cities built in Kumbh area for the stay of devotees coming to Mahakumbh has started due to this cyber criminals have also become active regarding online booking, ” said Priyadarshi.
He stated that cybercriminals are conducting cyberfraud by tricking devotees traveling to Mahakumbh by using phony links and websites that promise to book hotels, Dharamshala, tent cities, and cottages at discounted prices and steal money from them in the guise of advance.
DGP Priyadarshi emphasized that online reservations should only be made using the official links that Uttar Pradesh Police has supplied for the sake of public safety.
The official website, https://kumbh.gov.in/en/ Wheretostaylist, has the list of verified lodgings along with their names, locations, and phone numbers.
People can report cyber fraud by calling the national hotline at ‘1930’ or by visiting the official cybercrime website at www.cybercrime.gov.in.
