SC notifies to Center on PIL on enormous rise in cybercrime and unsolicited calls in the country

The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Center to respond to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that claimed the nation was experiencing a “nuisance” of unsolicited calls and a “enormous rise” in cybercrimes. A court made up of Justice Sanjay Kumar and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna sent a notice to the Department of Telecommunications, observing that government entities were fulfilling their obligations.

“Yes, we understand the problem is there. Let the Centre respond,” the bench said, noting the PIL of one Gowrishankar from Bengaluru.

In the petition, telecom network operators were asked to use the calling name presentation service (CNAP).

The feature, which makes it easier to identify the caller’s name and is often shown in the phone’s caller ID area, may assist receivers in avoiding spam calls and making educated call decisions.
