R1, a new open-source AI reasoning model from DeepSeek, has quickly taken off in the IT sector and momentarily overtook ChatGPT from OpenAI on the App Store. Pat Gelsinger, the former CEO of Intel, has now joined the discussion and praised the model’s effectiveness. Gelsinger considered important lessons from computer history that R1 supports in a post on X (previously Twitter): “Open Wins,” reduced prices drive adoption, and innovation flourishes under limits.

In his post, Gelsinger also expressed gratitude to the DeepSeek team.

He wrote:
“Wisdom is learning the lessons we thought we already knew. DeepSeek reminds us of three important learnings from computing history:

  • Computing obeys the gas law. Making it dramatically cheaper will expand the market for it. The markets are getting it wrong, this will make AI much more broadly deployed.
  • Engineering is about constraints. The Chinese engineers had limited resources, and they had to find creative solutions.
  • Open Wins. DeepSeek will help reset the increasingly closed world of foundational AI model work. Thank you DeepSeek team.”
Gelsinger responded in the affirmative when a user questioned if he would still be “excited about DeepSeek” if he were still the CEO of Intel.

After a protracted period of business difficulties that significantly damaged the company’s market position and investor trust, Gelsinger was “fired” as Intel CEO in December of last year. He presently serves as the chairman of Gloo, a messaging and engagement platform created especially for churches with the goal of improving community development and communication inside religious institutions.

He told media “My Gloo engineers are running R1 today. They could’ve run o1 — well, they can only access o1, through the APIs.”
