Tripura Adopts AI-Powered Technology to Eliminate Language Barriers: IT Minister

The Tripura government has embraced advanced technology to overcome language barriers and enhance the effectiveness of government software and services, said Information and Technology Minister Pranajit Singha Roy on Tuesday.

The announcement came during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of Tripura and the Digital India Bhashini Division (DIDB) of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.

Speaking at the event, the Minister stated, “Tripura is the first state in the North East and the eighth state in India to adopt smart translation technology powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP).”

He highlighted that this initiative would not only enable people from diverse backgrounds to better understand Tripura but also foster inclusivity across the state.“Our state is multilingual, with Bengali being the majority language alongside the 19 tribal communities, each with their own unique languages and rich cultural heritage. This new technology will facilitate cultural exchange and strengthen unity among various communities,” the Minister added.

The Minister praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting innovative ideas that emphasize cultural inclusivity, stating, “The Prime Minister has always focused on unity in diversity through his initiatives.”The event was attended by IT Secretary Kiran Gitte, Amitabha Nag (CEO of DIBD, MeitY), and Jeya Ragul Geshan B., Director of IT for the Government of Tripura.

A press release from the IT Department described Bhashini as a groundbreaking initiative under the Digital India program. It aims to ensure seamless communication and internet accessibility for all citizens. The software supports real-time translation across speech-to-text, text-to-speech, and voice-to-voice mediums.

Regional languages can now be translated into English in real time with high accuracy, thanks to the integration of AI and NLP.Additionally, a one-day workshop followed the MoU exchange, where strategies to promote regional languages on digital platforms and software applications were discussed.

The initiative is expected to reduce the digital divide and further Tripura’s progress in technological inclusivity.
