Amid rising worries over DeepSeek’s data gathering tactics, officials in Seoul, South Korea’s data protection body plan to launch an investigation to the Chinese AI startup.
The authorities stated that the interior ministry’s Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) intends to issue a formal inquiry to DeepSeek’s Chinese headquarters, seeking comprehensive details on the startup’s personal data gathering policies.
According to the media, the PIPC also intends to inquire about how DeepSeek utilizes user data for AI training.
The action was taken in reaction to the sharp increase in DeepSeek users in South Korea and growing worries about possible privacy threats, according to a commission official.
“Depending on the response, we will take further steps such as a fact-finding review or an investigation if necessary,” the official said.
According to major international media publications, businesses and government agencies throughout the world are limiting access to DeepSeek because to concerns about privacy violations and data leaks.
In accordance with its privacy policy, DeepSeek gathers a variety of personal data, such as users’ names, dates of birth, email addresses, phone numbers, and passwords in order to train AI models.
Additionally, the business collects conversation history, uploaded files, audio data, and keyboard input patterns. According to the policy, DeepSeek retains the right, in its sole discretion, to provide such material to governmental authorities and law enforcement.
After a week-long holiday, South Korean equities finished Friday down as tech shares plummeted following a recent shock from the rise of Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) firm DeepSeek. The value of the Korean won was significantly declining in relation to the US dollar.
Local shares worth 1.2 trillion won were sold by foreigners, while institutions and individual investors bought a total of 1.16 trillion won.
