The Austrian advocacy group NOYB, which was established on Thursday, has filed two complaints against the European Parliament.

The European Parliament is the target of two complaints from the Austrian advocacy group NOYB, which was founded on Thursday. The accusations accuse the European Parliament of failing to effectively protect the personal data of its employees. The organization, headed by privacy campaigner Max Schrems, announced that it was submitting the complaints on behalf of four workers in reaction to a data breach that impacted over 8,000 staff members’ passports, criminal histories, and marriage licenses on the parliament’s hiring platform.

The organization None of Your Business, or NOYB, expressed concern that the parliament, which notified employees of the breach in May, only learned about it months later and still doesn’t seem to know what caused it.

This hack follows a string of cyberattacks that occurred at EU institutions throughout the previous year, according to Lorea Mendiguren, a data protection attorney with NOYB. “The Parliament has an obligation to ensure proper security measures, given that its employees are likely targets for bad actors.” According to NOYB, the European Data Protection Supervisor, which is responsible for monitoring compliance with the GDPR, should impose penalties on the parliament for its alleged noncompliance.
