Agency in Singapore alerts about AI-driven cyberattack

According to the agency’s Singapore Cyber Landscape 2023 study, which was released on Tuesday, bad actors are utilizing generative AI to detect software vulnerabilities, circumvent biometric authentication, and execute deepfake schemes.

Singapore The city-state’s Cyber Security Agency (CSA) has issued a warning on criminal actors’ use of developing artificial intelligence technologies in cyberattacks. According to the organization, Al is used to improve a number of hacking techniques, such as social engineering and reconnaissance. “This is likely to increase, driven by the ever-growing stores of data that can be used to train Al models for higher-quality results,” the CSA was quoted as saying in a report by Channel News Asia.

According to the agency’s Singapore Cyber Landscape 2023 study, which was released on Tuesday, bad actors are utilizing generative algorithms to detect software vulnerabilities, circumvent biometric authentication, and execute deepfake schemes. All methods are used to generate deepfakes that modify or manipulate audio and visual information. Deepfake calls, videos, and images have been utilized by malicious actors for political or commercial ends.

This year, a number of MPs were sent extortion letters featuring photoshopped images of themselves overlaid on lewd pictures of a man and a woman. Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong also issued a warning to the public last month regarding deepfake films that purportedly showed him discussing foreign leaders and international issues. In 2023, technology, government, and banking and financial services were the most often mocked industries.

In phishing attempts, sixty-three percent of the impersonated organizations were from the banking and financial services industries. “This industry is often masqueraded as banking, and financial institutions are trusted organizations that hold significant amounts of sensitive and valuable information, such as personal details and login credentials,” stated CSA. In 2023, cybersecurity vendors reported a record number of ransomware victims worldwide, according to the agency’s study. Similar to 2022, there were 132 cases in Singapore. According to the NSA, ransomware groups have changed their focus to speedier and more covert exfiltration-only data extortion attempts. This technique describes the unlawful movement of data without the use of file or system encryption.

According to CSA, ransomware gangs have also started using extra coercive measures, like pestering victim organizations’ clients to force them to pay the ransom.
