Using AI, 36,271 Supreme Court judgments have been translated into Hindi.
In a written response to the Lok Sabha on Friday, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Law and Justice, stated that the Supreme Court of India has embraced artificial intelligence (AI) language technology to translate judicial documents, improve legal research, and automate various processes.
AI has also been used to record oral arguments in Constitution Bench cases since February 2023.
The minister announced that a committee chaired by an honorable Supreme Court judge has been constituted to supervise the translation of important decisions made by the Supreme Court and High Court into vernacular languages.
“The Committee is having regular meetings with the Sub-Committees of High Courts comprising Hon’ble Judges to expedite the process of translation,” Meghwal said.
Regional language translations of Supreme Court and High Court rulings are being closely observed by the AI translation committees of the High Courts. Eight High Courts have already started publishing e-High Court Reports (e-HCRs), and more are working on it.
Additionally, the AI Committees have directed the state governments of each of the High Courts’ member states to request that all Central and State laws, rules, and regulations be translated into regional languages and posted on state websites.
“It has also been impressed upon all the state governments to extend full support to the respective high courts in the exercise of translation of judgments since it is part of ‘access to justice’ as envisaged under the Constitution of India,” the MoS said.
Using artificial intelligence, “36,271 Supreme Court judgments have been translated into Hindi, and 17,142 judgments have been translated into 16 other regional languages,” till August 5, the Minister said, adding that these translations are available on the e-SCR portal.
Interestingly, this translation effort has not received any additional funding approval. The minister stated that in spite of this, the Supreme Court is still making great progress in guaranteeing that legal papers are available to all citizens, boosting inclusivity and openness in the Indian legal system.
