Airtel and Nokia collaborate to advance mobile network sustainability initiatives

Today, Bharti Airtel and Nokia revealed a ground-breaking partnership on “Green 5G,” a project to bring energy-saving techniques and solutions to Airtel’s mobile network. This ambitious initiative will use cutting-edge technology such as AI/ML, along with a suite of sophisticated software features and creative solutions, to improve energy efficiency throughout Airtel’s vast 4G/5G Radio Access Network (RAN).

The all-inclusive solution is anticipated to lower Airtel’s yearly carbon emissions by an estimated 143,413 metric tonnes of CO2 and improve energy efficiency both during peak and off-peak hours.

Randeep Sekhon, CTO, Bharti Airtel, said, “In response to the surging demand for data, mobile networks across India have rapidly expanded, particularly with the rollout of 5G technology. At Bharti Airtel, our commitment to sustainability has led us to collaborate with Nokia. This partnership allows us to leverage innovative solutions that deliver substantial energy savings, enabling us to significantly reduce our carbon footprint and further our environmental objectives in alignment with our business strategy.”

Tarun Chhabra, Head of Mobile Networks at Nokia, India, said, “We are excited to partner with Bharti Airtel to drive sustainable network practices in the country. Nokia has committed to reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions globally by 2040. Our innovative technologies will not only enhance the overall performance of communications networks but also significantly help reduce their energy consumption, contributing to the energy efficiency targets of our customers.”

The key aspects of this collaboration include:

  1. Aiming for zero-traffic, zero-watt operation: This method optimises energy management by reducing the radio network’s power usage to extremely low watts when there is no traffic.
  2. Combining Nokia’s advanced energy-saving features with Airtel’s AI/ML algorithms: Across their 4G and 5G radio resources, the firms have automated and optimised sophisticated energy-saving software by utilising AI/ML.
  3. Moving to a digital design for enhanced energy efficiency: Advanced computerised design tools have been tested by the corporations to optimise cell layouts for reduced transmitted power. This improves energy costs and the CO2 footprint without degrading network performance or user experience. This enhances network performance both during peak and off-peak times.
  4. Employing a ReefShark System-on-Chip: The most recent generation of SoCs optimises power usage based on traffic load and adjusts internal resources to actual processing needs, resulting in increased energy efficiency. An extra 15% less energy will be used as a result of the new platform generation.
Airtel has committed to reducing emissions across its activities, and in order to meet these goals, it is putting in place a number of significant initiatives. These consist of encouraging energy efficiency, making use of green energy that is accessible to everybody, and implementing renewable energy solutions across the network. Along with increasing waste management techniques, resource efficiency, and climate resilience, the corporation is developing a more climate-resilient infrastructure. Remarkably, Airtel has installed solar-powered systems at about 25,000 locations thus far, and in FY2024, it procured 220,541 MWh through green power wheeling agreements and captive solar rooftop plants, significantly increasing the use of renewable energy in its data centres.
