Amazon has acknowledged that employee data was compromised. The issue is related to the May 2023 worldwide hack of the MOVEit data transfer tool.
More than 2.8 million lines of Amazon employee data, including names, contact details, building locations, and email addresses, were exposed by a threat actor going by the moniker Nam3L3ss. The business did clarify, though, that private data such as government identification, financial information, and Social Security numbers had not been exposed.
A representative for Amazon, Adam Montgomery, clarified that a third-party service provider in charge of property management was the source of the data breach. Employee contact information was obtained without authorization through the exploitation of the vendor’s systems.
Information from a number of other well-known businesses, including Lenovo, HP, TIAA, Schwab, HSBC, Delta, McDonald’s, and Metlife, is also included in the hacked data. Allegedly, a number of techniques, including ransom gang leak sites and database hacking, were used to gain some of this data.
The event serves as a reminder of the increasing danger of cyberattacks and the necessity of strong security protocols, particularly for businesses that depend on outside service providers.
