Amazon plans to eliminate Just Walk Out technology from its Amazon Fresh locations as part of an effort to reinvent the grocery chain.
Amazon is deleting Just Walk Out technology from its Amazon Fresh locations as part of a revamping of the grocery chain. The company’s well-known technology allows customers to pay for things without standing in line and then receive receipts. Amazon says it will be replaced with smart carts that allow users to skip the checkout line while also tracking their spending in real time.
While redesigning Fresh locations over the last year, Amazon spokesperson Carly Golden stated that the company heard from consumers who love skipping the checkout queue but also want to see their receipts and discounts while shopping. Golden stated that smart carts will provide these benefits as well as the convenience of skipping the checkout line.
The information originally revealed Amazon’s decision.
Amazon, based in Seattle, maintains dozens of Fresh grocery stores across the US, with the majority located in California, Illinois, Virginia, and Washington State. The corporation also runs cashier-free convenience stores under the Amazon Go brand and owns Whole Foods, which it bought for $13.7 billion in 2017.
Despite expectations that Amazon’s entry into the grocery industry will upset the market, the business has struggled to find what works. In his 2023 annual letter to shareholders, Amazon CEO Andy Jassy stated that the company was attempting to find the ideal formula that would allow it to have a greater impact on physical food stores. The company has closed some Amazon Fresh and Go stores that were failing to meet their promises, and it announced early last year that it was halting the expansion of Fresh locations.
In November, the firm reopened three Fresh locations in Los Angeles, Calif. Golden, an Amazon spokeswoman, stated that the business is currently focusing on “selectively” creating new Fresh stores and refurbishing the majority of its existing locations.
Just Walk Out technology will continue to be offered in Amazon Go stores and select smaller Amazon Fresh outlets in the United Kingdom, the company said.
