A change to Apple’s next macOS release was made public on Tuesday, making it a little harder for customers to turn off Gatekeeper security.

A change to Apple’s upcoming macOS version was revealed on Tuesday, and it makes it slightly more challenging for users to disable Gatekeeper security. In order to guarantee that only reliable apps are allowed to operate on the operating system, Gatekeeper is an essential security feature integrated into macOS. An app’s identification as being from a recognized developer is confirmed the first time it’s launched after being downloaded from anywhere other than the App Store. Additionally, it does tests to make sure the app has not been modified to install malware on macOS systems and is not notarized. Additionally, before enabling the use of any such third-party app, user consent is required.

With macOS Sequoia, the upcoming Mac operating system that is anticipated to be released next month, Apple has now restricted this user approval process even more. “In macOS Sequoia, users will no longer be able to control-click to override Gatekeeper when opening software that isn’t signed correctly or notarized,” Apple stated. “They’ll need to visit System Settings > Privacy & Security to review security information for software before allowing it to run.” The action is perceived as a means of combating backdoors and stealer malware that prey on macOS and are frequently unsigned, deceiving users into evading Gatekeeper security measures.

Threat actors from North Korea were seen in July 2023 spreading an unregistered disk image (DMG) file that appeared to be a genuine video call service called MiroTalk. The DMG file then released its harmful activity when a victim control-clicked, chose “Open,” and disregarded Apple’s security warning.
