Arete’s Q3 2024 Crimeware Report, which highlighted significant changes and important developments in the cyber threat ecosystem, was issued. Global teams at Arete collect information and insights from all facets of the threat lifecycle, offering thorough visibility to support threat landscape research. The study uses information gathered from Arete’s Q3 2024 reaction to extortion and ransomware attacks. It looks at the most frequently seen threat groups, ransom demand and payment patterns, ransomware attack target industries, and the effects of law enforcement initiatives.
Key findings within the report:
Throughout Q3, new ransomware groups kept appearing; some of these groups resembled Ransomware-as-a-Service (RaaS) companies that had previously ceased operations or allegedly sold their source code.
Although initial demands and median payments rose in Q3, the proportion of businesses and organizations paying ransoms stayed low.
In contrast to Q2, when the Fog ransomware gang frequently targeted organizations in the education sector, threat actors did not seem to purposefully target particular industries in Q3.
With the exception of Cobalt Strike, which was significantly less prevalent in Q3, cybercriminals continued to use the majority of the same malware versions and trustworthy tools seen in the first half of 2024.
“As threat actors evolve their tactics, Arete continues to monitor their activity, analyse trends, and leverage our threat intelligence to better respond to cyber threats,” said Geoff Brown, Arete’s President and Chief Operating Officer. “Using this unique data, we are dedicated to protecting our clients, informing our partners, and contributing to the shared fight against cyber extortion. ” Brown added.
