Ascension warns of a possible cyberattack; clinical procedures disrupted

Hospital operator Ascension revealed clinical operations challenges owing to a possible cybersecurity threat and encouraged business partners to temporarily disengage from its systems.

On Wednesday, hospital operator Ascension reported difficulties in clinical operations owing to a suspected cybersecurity issue and encouraged business partners to temporarily disengage from its systems.

Earlier this year, UnitedHealth (UNH.N.), the largest U.S. health insurer, announced a cyberattack at its IT unit, one of the worst hacks to hit American healthcare, resulting in widespread disruptions in payments to doctors and health facilities.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we are recommending that business partners temporarily suspend their connection to the Ascension environment,” the hospital network stated in a statement.

It stated that it is still investigating the problem after discovering odd activity on its selected technology network systems. Ascension noted that access to some systems had been halted while the process of assessing the effect and duration of the outages continued.

The organization stated that it has undertaken measures to guarantee that patient care delivery remains safe and minimally impacted.

Ascension further stated that it had hired third-party expert Mandiant to assist with the investigation and repair process and had contacted the necessary authorities.

Founded in 1999 as a Catholic organization, the network now includes over 134,000 associates, 35,000 connected clinicians, and 140 hospitals in 19 states and the District of Columbia.
