Reports have surfaced that Chinese state-affiliated hackers attempted to intercept audio from calls of US political heavyweights, including an unidentified campaign adviser of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, with less than ten days till one of the most anticipated US presidential elections.

According to media reports, the FBI and the US Cybersecurity and Equipment Security Agency were looking into the event in which individuals connected to China were able to get unauthorized access to commercial telecommunications equipment.
Regarding the incident, neither the FBI nor Trump’s team released a statement. According to the article, the hackers were also able to obtain text messages and other unencrypted data.

According to a previous media report, Chinese hackers targeted phones belonging to individuals connected to Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ campaign.
Several media publications reported last week that former President Trump and his running mate JD Vance were also targeted.

Iranian hackers gained access to the Trump campaign earlier this year. Three Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps members were charged by the US Justice Department with the hack, claiming they attempted to tamper with the US presidential election on November 5. Media reports claim that the Trump campaign was informed last week that the Verizon system had been compromised, targeting the phone numbers of several individuals both inside and outside the government, including Republican presidential and vice-presidential contenders.

Last week, the Chinese embassy in Washington stated that Beijing opposes and fights all types of cyberattacks and that it was not aware of any such hacking attempts.
