The competition authority in Australia stated that efforts to provide internet users more options needed to be reviewed, pointing to Google’s large market dominance and its rivals’ inability to take advantage of the artificial intelligence revolution.

According to an Australian Competition and Consumer Commission assessment, Big Tech has an advantage due to its large financial resources and dominant market position, even if the incorporation of generative AI technologies into search engines is still in its infancy.

Concerns over the precision and dependability of search queries are raised by the commission’s concern that Google and Microsoft may incorporate generative AI into their search services, including through business agreements.

“While some consumers may find the generative AI search experience more useful and efficient, others may be concerned about the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated responses to search queries,” Commissioner Peter Crone said.

Google and Microsoft did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The digital companies, which are primarily based in the United States, are under more scrutiny due to Australia. It was the first nation to require media outlets to pay royalties to social media platforms for reposting their content.

It approved a bill last month that prohibited children under 16 from using social media, and earlier this week it proposed a rule that would pay tech companies up to A$50 million ($32.28 million) for stifling competition and preventing customers from transferring between platforms.

The adoption of service-specific codes, which assist in stopping anti-competitive behavior, address data benefits, and let customers freely transfer between services, was encouraged by the Australian authority on Wednesday.

The ACCC stated that the government has agreed in principle to these suggested measures and that it will conclude its investigation by March of next year.
