Authorities in the US and Europe took down the Dispossessor ransomware organization

Authorities in Germany and the United States announced on Tuesday that the criminal ransomware gang Radar/Dispossessor, which was operating worldwide and that had attacked at least dozens of businesses in industries like healthcare and transportation, had been knocked out.

Founded in August 2023, the group, Dispossessor—headed by the internet persona “Brain”—focused on small and medium-sized businesses, initially in the US before becoming global.

According to them, 43 companies from various countries such as Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Honduras, India, Canada, Croatia, Peru, Poland, the United Kingdom, the United Arab Emirates, and Germany have been identified as victims after the investigation.

They added that hospitals in the US have also been targeted by Dispossessor and that a great number of companies have probably been impacted but are not yet known to the authorities.

They claimed that weak passwords, insecure computer systems, and a deficiency in two-factor authentication provided an entry point into business IT systems from which data might be taken hostage.

Authorities said that Dispossessor’s servers and domains in the US, Britain, and Germany have been taken down.

German officials have identified twelve suspects from Germany, Ukraine, Russia, Kenya, Serbia, Lithuania, and the United Arab Emirates.

They said that the current priorities are finding more suspects and learning details about other businesses that have been harmed.
