Bayer hopes to use AI to battle herbicide resistance more quickly

Bayer’s crop science division is depending more and more on artificial intelligence to fight weeds that damage crops, the company states.

In an effort to combat weeds that harm crops, Bayer’s crop science business is relying more and more on artificial intelligence, the company said.

As weeds become more resilient to the pesticides now available on the market, agribusiness corporations such as Bayer are desperately seeking novel methods of eradicating weeds from agricultural fields.

When Bayer’s Icafolin product launches in Brazil in 2028, it will be the company’s first new mode of action herbicide in about thirty years.

AI may hasten the process of discovering the next novel course of action, according to Frank Terhorst, executive vice president of strategy and sustainability at Bayer’s Crop Science Division, who spoke on Monday.

“You want to identify the one that gives you the best results for eliminating weeds with the least amount of effect on other plants. And striking that balance is really challenging, “Terhorst said following a Chicago event.

He said that artificial intelligence (AI) allows businesses to leverage massive amounts of data by matching the protein structure of a weed with a chemical that targets that structure.

He said that there are fewer dropouts and that the procedure is quicker.

The timescale for finding the next novel mode of action might be significantly shortened with the use of AI technologies, according to a statement made by Bob Reiter, head of research and development, crop science, at Bayer.

“If we take the example of early research only, we today have at least three times the number of new modes of action compared to ten years ago,” he stated.
