Bengaluru woman lost Rs. 1.2 crore in ‘digital arrest’ scam

Bengaluru software engineer, 28, is accused of losing Rs 1.2 crore in a “digital arrest” fraud. She admitted to the police that when the scammers had depleted her resources, she had even taken out a loan of Rs 40 lakh.

When the woman went to the east division police last week to lodge a complaint, the event was discovered. On December 11, the woman reported to the police that she had received an automated voice response (IVR) call from a foreign number posing as DHL shipping services. The caller allegedly told her to call a Mumbai police station after claiming that a package in her name included illicit things such as narcotics, ATM cards, and phony passports.

She said that shortly after, she received a call from a guy claiming to be “Mumbai Crime Branch officer Sunil Datt Dubey.” He allegedly issued a “digital arrest” warrant and accused her of participating in a $10.9 million (Rs 93.89 crore) money laundering conspiracy.

Using fake paperwork from financial institutions, the Mumbai Crime Branch, and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the fraudsters reportedly forced her to transfer assets and requested proof of her cash.

The woman liquidated her savings and transferred Rs 75.63 lakh since she felt that her assistance was crucial. A further Rs 55.87 lakh was allegedly requested by the scammers as a bail payment for her property. She informed the police that she was unable to fulfill the demand, so she borrowed Rs 40 lakh and added Rs 5 lakh from her remaining resources to pay the scammers.

Once the “case” was resolved, the fraudsters promised a reimbursement, but they abruptly stopped communicating and disappeared. The victim informed the authorities about the fraud after realizing it, and they have now launched an inquiry.
