Bhubaneswar reports Cybercrime cases increased by 50% from 2023 to 2024

The number of cybercrime-related events reported to the Commissionerate Police increased significantly in 2024. The Commissionerate police published the data with local media on Wednesday in their yearly crime statistics for 2024.

According to data released by the Commissionerate police, there were 7263 cybercrime-related incidents in Bhubaneswar last year, up from 4832 instances in 2023. In 2024, the number of cybercrime-related occurrences in the capital city of Bhubaneswar increased by over 50%.

It is important to note that in 2022, Bhubaneswar recorded 3614 incidents involving different types of cyber fraud. This shows that in the past two years, the number of cybercrime cases in the city has more than doubled.

Financial fraud, UPI transaction fraud, credit card/debit card fraud, and social media fraud accounted for 2653, 1872, 781, and 1076 of the 7263 instances that were recorded in 2024.

In this respect, 322 FIRs were filed by the Commissionerate police last year. During the aforementioned time frame, the police also detained 38 cybercriminals, 20 of whom were from outside the state.

Last year, the scammers in Bhubaneswar defrauded the unsuspecting victims out of Rs 82,53,56,251.

The police were able to freeze Rs 23,60,14,447 of the total sum that the cybercriminals had scammed, while the victims received a return of Rs 2,50,00,000.

In its report, the Commissionerate police also noted that last year, police in Bhubaneswar resolved a number of high-profile crimes, including call center cases, financial investment frauds, social media harassment and blackmail cases, and digital arrest scams.

In contrast, the number of criminal cases registered in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack increased by more than 11% in 2024.

In 2024, 21613 criminal cases were filed at various police stations in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, compared to 19410 crimes filed in 2023. According to the Commissionerate Police’s report, there were 89 murder cases reported in the twin city region last year compared to 78 in 2023.

Additionally, the twin city saw an increase in cheating occurrences in 2024 compared to 2023. Compared to 1471 occurrences in 2023, there were 1729 swindling cases reported last year.

However, in 2024, there was a decrease in the number of criminal cases registered in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack pertaining to rape, robbery, dacoity, burglary, theft, and rioting.
