During the Nishant trial, Pankaj Awasthi, the UP-ATS investigating officer, stated in his deposition that a person named “Sejal” had created a Facebook account in Pakistan. She used this to communicate with her Indian targets and Pakistani operatives.

A sessions court has condemned former BrahMos scientist Nishant Agrawal to life in prison for giving Pakistan access to military secrets. Nishant was employed at Nagpur in the missile assembly plant. Nishant, a missile engineer with multiple awards, was found guilty by the Sessions Court in accordance with Section 235 of the Criminal Procedure Code. He was found guilty of crimes covered by the Official Secrets Act (OSA) and Section 66(f) of the IT Act for disclosing vital information to foreign powers about armaments.

During the Nishant trial, Pankaj Awasthi, the UP-ATS investigating officer, stated in his deposition that a person named “Sejal” had created a Facebook account in Pakistan. She used this to communicate with her Indian targets and Pakistani operatives.

Names of the three apps that Pakistani spies used

Chats revealed Sejal was a member of a network that disseminated information and advice on tricking Indian defense personnel. Awasthi testified in court that Agrawal had installed three apps on his own laptop in 2017 after clicking on links given by Sejal. Qwhisper, Chat to Hire, and X-trust were these apps.

Nishant’s laptop held classified information that was stolen by these three malicious programs. According to investigations, he violated BAPL’s security protocols by putting sensitive papers about the BrahMos missile on his personal computers.

Sejal allegedly expressed interest in recruiting Nishant while they were chatting on LinkedIn, where she was assuming the role of recruiter for Hays Aviation in the UK.

How was missile engineer Nishant arrested?

In October 2018, Military Intelligence (MI) and the Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) from Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra collaborated to arrest Nishant. He worked at BAPL, an Indo-Russian joint company that produces BrahMos missiles, in the technical research department.

BrahMos Aerospace is a joint enterprise of the Russian Military Industrial Consortium (NPO Mashinostroyenia) and the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO).
