Brazil’s National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) has decided to withdraw Meta’s validity with immediate effect.

The National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) of Brazil has made the decision to revoke Meta’s (META.O) validity effective immediately and has opened a new tab for the country’s new privacy policy regarding the use of personal data to train generative artificial intelligence systems. The preventive action taken by ANPD was published in the official gazette of Brazil on Tuesday. It halts the processing of personal data, including that of users of the tech giant’s platforms, across all Meta products.

A daily punishment of 50,000 reais ($8,836.58) was established by the authority, which is a branch of Brazil’s Justice Ministry, for noncompliance. In rendering its ruling, the ANPD referenced the “imminent risk of serious and irreparable or difficult-to-repair damage to the fundamental rights of affected holders.” The Brazilian authorities state that Meta must modify its privacy policy to remove the part about processing personal data for generative AI training. Additionally, it must provide a public statement stating that it has stopped processing personal data for that reason.

In a statement, Meta expressed that it was “disappointed” by the ANPD’s choice and added that it would cause a “setback for innovation” and postpone the benefits of artificial intelligence for Brazilians. “We are more transparent than many players in this industry who have used public content to train their models and products,” Meta stated. “Our approach complies with privacy laws and regulations in Brazil.”
