In response to the government’s criticism of its recently implemented privacy policy pertaining to artificial intelligence and personal data, Meta Platforms declared that it has decided to discontinue the use of generative AI technologies in Brazil.

In reaction to the government’s criticism of its new privacy policy regarding personal data and artificial intelligence, Meta Platforms (META.O) announced on Wednesday that it has chosen to halt the usage of generative artificial intelligence technologies in Brazil.

Brazil, home to more than 200 million people, is an important market for Meta. For instance, after India, Brazil has the second-largest WhatsApp user base on Meta. To introduce its first AI-driven ad targeting campaign for companies on the well-known chat service, Meta threw an event in Sao Paulo in June.

The National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) of Brazil voted earlier this month to revoke Meta’s new privacy policy that permits the use of personal data to train generative artificial intelligence systems in the nation, effective immediately. The Brazilian body, ANPD, decided that the corporation would have to modify its privacy policy to remove the part about processing personal data for generative AI training.

In an announcement, Meta stated that in order to allay the authority’s concerns over generative artificial intelligence, it has chosen to halt the tools while it holds discussions with ANPD.
