The names and bank account information of thousands of active British soldiers, sailors, and air force personnel were made public by British officials after they discovered a data breach in a payroll system.
According to British officials, a payroll system data breach revealed the identities and bank account information of thousands of active British soldiers, sailors, and air force personnel. According to the Ministry of Defense, “the multi-point plan to support and protect personnel” would be laid out in a Tuesday afternoon statement by Defense Secretary Grant Shapps in the House of Commons.
Regarding a report that Chinese hackers are thought to be behind the breach, the ministry remained silent.
“We are not saying that at this precise moment,” said Cabinet Minister Mel Stride.
According to British media, the government will point the finger at “hostile and malign actors,” but it won’t say which nation it holds accountable.
The breach happened at a third-party payroll system that contained all active military personnel’s bank information as well as certain veterans’s information. In a few instances, addresses might have also been compromised.
Investigators have not discovered any proof that data has been erased thus far.
In a campaign of “malicious” breaches, Britain and the US claimed in March that hackers connected to the Chinese government had attacked firms, pro-democracy activists, US officials, journalists, and the UK’s election watchdog. The US filed charges against seven alleged hackers who were all thought to be residing in China, and the two nations slapped penalties on a number of people.
