Cybercriminals recently defrauded a BSF officer in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, of Rs 71 lakh.
It is the biggest digital swindle in the city’s history, according to authorities. According to reports, the scammers “digitally arrested” the cop, entangling him in a web of deceit and terror.
The cop claims that the incident started when the fraudsters called him on WhatsApp around a month ago. The caller said that the officer’s phone was being monitored and that they were looking into a money-laundering case.
The con artists threatened to have his children and family members arrested if he told anybody about the situation.
The officer, who lived alone in Gwalior, gave in to their pressure and started sending money as directed. He sent an incredible Rs 71 lakh to the scammers in about 34 transactions over the course of a month. He even sold his property to raise the money because he was so afraid of being “digitally arrested.”
When the officer’s son saw the continuous deception and took action, the swindle was exposed. He persuaded his father to inform the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Gwalior about the situation. Still in shock, the officer told SP Dharamveer Singh everything that happened, and he affirmed that a thorough inquiry had been started.
According to SP Singh, the scammers coerced the officer by inciting fear, even stating that their activities were a part of government “awareness campaigns.” Fear-stricken, the officer obeyed their orders without telling his BSF office.
In an effort to identify the network behind this complex fraud, authorities are currently tracking down the transactions. The SP promised that when the inquiry is over, the proper legal action will be done.
This example is a sobering reminder of the increasing danger of cybercrime and the necessity of increased awareness, particularly for people in delicate occupations.
