64 people were detained in connection with 219 incidents of online money fraud and other cybercrimes that the police in the Central Zone’s nine districts reported in 2024.

In terms of online fraud and other cybercrime cases, Thanjavur district led the zone with 58 instances, followed by Tiruchi district with 51 cases. The numbers for the districts of Karur and Pudukottai were 22 and 25, respectively.

Fraudsters’ bank accounts were stopped, and ₹5.02 crore was taken out of them. As instructed by the court, the seized sum was given to the impacted parties.

Forty complaints have been filed by the police against people who shared statements on social media that were deemed to be antisocial and violent. In this regard, thirteen people were taken into custody and placed in jail.

Up to 3,211 awareness initiatives on online fraud and cybercrimes were carried out. Public members were urged to report cybercrimes by calling the toll-free hotline 1930.

According to a press release from the Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, here, superintendents of police in the districts of Tiruchi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Karur, Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai have been urged to take strong action against those who commit cybercrimes and those who post messages on social media platforms that incite violence and undermine social harmony.
