Google Chrome users in India should heed the urgent warning that the Indian government’s cybertech agency, CERT-In, has issued.

Google Chrome contains a number of vulnerabilities that the Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-In) has found to be highly dangerous to security. These flaws might possibly result in serious security breaches by enabling a remote attacker to run arbitrary code on a victim’s machine.

These issues are covered in depth in CERT-In’s August 7, 2024 Vulnerability Note CIVN-2024-0231. Google Chrome versions 127.0.6533.88/89 for Windows and Mac, as well as versions 127.0.6533.88 for Linux, are vulnerable.

To protect themselves from potential attacks, users of these versions of Chrome are recommended to update their browsers right away.

Problems with Chrome

The vulnerabilities stem from shortcomings in the way that Google Chrome performs specific tasks. Particular issues include reading outside the allowed boundaries in “WebTransport,” uninitialized use in “dawn,” and inadequate data validation in “dawn.” A user could be tricked into visiting a specially designed website by an attacker looking to take advantage of these vulnerabilities. After the user accesses the website, the attacker has the ability to run any code on the victim’s computer. This might lead to malware being installed, unauthorized access to private data, or even total control of the victim’s machine.

How do users proceed?

Users are recommended to update to the most recent stable version of the Google Chrome browser in order to guard against these vulnerabilities. Updates from Google already solve these problems. The ‘About Google Chrome’ area of the settings menu is usually where users update their browsers. From there, the browser will automatically check for updates and install them. This CERT-In alert emphasizes how crucial it is to maintain software updates. These kinds of vulnerabilities are easily exploited by hostile actors; however, users can be shielded from such harm by receiving updates on time. Indian Chrome users should upgrade their browsers right away and make sure their computers are secure.
