ChatGPT Creator OpenAI Joins Forces With Abu Dhabi's G42 as UAE Builds on AI Adoption

Abu Dhabi’s G42 declared that it will use OpenAI’s generative AI models in multiple industries, including public services.

The company that developed ChatGPT, OpenAI, has teamed up with G42, the digital conglomerate based in Abu Dhabi, on Wednesday in an effort to promote the use of artificial intelligence in the United Arab Emirates and other Middle Eastern markets.

The emirate of Abu Dhabi launched G42, which declared it will use OpenAI’s generative AI models in industries like finance, energy, medicine, and public services.

The agreement, the financial details of which were not made public, is one of several steps taken to advance the technology sector in the UAE.

Requests for comment were not immediately answered by the companies.

In the UAE, G42, which is supported by Mubadala, has been at the vanguard of AI adoption. In July, the company announced that it had worked with American AI company Cerebras Systems to create the largest supercomputer for AI training.

In May, the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC) in Abu Dhabi released its Falcom 40B large language model (LLM) as an open source project for both academic and industrial use.

G42 said that it would integrate Azure data centers into its AI architecture to increase regional adoption.

As part of his “world tour” of AI, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had stopped in Abu Dhabi in June. There, he promoted the idea of having international organizations oversee AI development.
