People in Chennai are in loss of Rs 189 crores because of cyber fraud

According to municipal police, since January of this year, cyber fraudsters have cost the people of Chennai up to Rs 189 crore. Police advised anyone who has lost money to an online scam to report the incident on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) by using the helpline number 1930 or the website http://cybercrime.gov.in. This will help to freeze the funds in the suspicious bank account and aid in the recovery process.

Of the 1,679 cybercrime instances that were recorded in Chennai this year, 1,589 were financial cybercrime crimes, meaning that someone deceived the public using a variety of cyberscams, including EB bill scams, Skype, digital arrests (Fed Ex, courier, TRAl), online share trading, online part-time jobs, and matrimonial presents.

A Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for investigating officers has been released by Chennai Police Commissioner Arun to expedite the process of collecting money from online financial crimes.

“An acknowledgment number of the NCRP sets the process of freezing the suspicious bank accounts involved in the crime and therefore it is of utmost importance for a victim of cybercrime to register in NCRP,” an official release stated.

The municipal police also mentioned a recent Madras High Court circular informing judges that, instead of requiring a formal complaint, the recovery process for money failed in financial crimes can begin with a complaint filed with the NCRP and proceeded with by a report filed by the cybercrime police.

In order to obtain the sum frozen in suspicious bank accounts, victims can file a petition under section 503 BNSS in their jurisdictional court based on the cyber police report and the NCRP acknowledgment, without having to wait for a formal complaint to be filed.
