USFB follows an approach where multiple cyber security solutions are implemented at the bank to provide a defense-in-depth approach.
This is an exclusive interview series conducted by the Editor Team of CIO News with Ratan Jyoti, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at Ujjivan Small Finance Bank Limited.
How did the journey start in the cyber security industry?
I have a Masters in Computer Applications (M.C.A.) and pioneer certifications in the cyber security space (CISSP, CISA, CEH) in the field of privacy (CDPSE, DCPP).
My journey started at ICAR (Indian Agricultural Statistics Research Institute) as a data warehouse architect, where I was involved in rolling out India’s first warehouse.
I have contributed significantly to the public sector banks, starting from the then Oriental Bank of Commerce to the then Corporation Bank.
After that, I joined Vijaya Bank as a senior manager (information security) and have contributed to shaping the security framework of the bank, from the part of senior management to the top-level management.
During my tenure as a CISO at Vijaya Bank, he has spearheaded security operations for the bank, chalked out the information security strategy, designed secured architecture in compliance with the prevalent frameworks, and established a name for the bank in the information security world.
My journey into the corporate world started with Ujjivan Small Finance Bank in 2016, where my role was not confined to the InfoSec platform but was given a significant role in providing vision, strategy, and operational direction to the organization.
What are my specializations?
Ratan Jyoti specializes in the following domains:
- Security Operations Leadership
- Cybersecurity and Digital Resiliency
- Legacy Security Transformations
- Full-Stack and Cloud Security
- Information Security KPI’s
- Security Policies and Compliance
- IT risk management
What do I aspire to do for USFB in the coming years?
The CISO (Chief Information Security Officer) plays an important role in preventing threats and breaches, communicating risks, and aligning with key stakeholders across the organization, in addition to managing a team of IT professionals. The CISO position is equally challenging and has rapidly evolved from a purely technical role to one that requires interpersonal skills. In the ever-growing landscape of the cyber world and the threat structures, one has to continuously improve their resilience structures. In view of the same, I have a bucket list to improve the risk culture of the bank in the cyber and information security space.
- Developing a privacy framework and setting up a trend in the banking domain. (The gap assessment has already been carried out, and it is a WIP.).
- Developing a dynamic threat modeling framework.
- Setting up a dedicated threat hunting team.
- Setting up a safe and secure cloud structure for USFB with the top service providers (Azure, AWS, or any other prominent cloud service provider).
- Many others as and when requested by the dynamic nature of cyberspace.
What has he done for Ujjivan Small Finance Bank?
At Ujjivan Small Finance Bank Ltd., my major task was to safeguard the bank’s assets from cyber threats by establishing a holistic information and cyber security infrastructure as well as by promoting information security within the organization.
I am also a member of the National Level Team, Change Control Board, IT Strategy, and ORM Committee, and a part of the committee shaping the future of the bank in terms of security in the ever-evolving cyber threat space.
I have successfully implemented a highly complex and secure architecture at the bank with the use of next-generation technologies and solutions like AI/ML, data analytics, blockchain, and zero-trust.
In addition to the same, USFB followed an approach where multiple cyber security solutions are implemented at the bank to provide a defense-in-depth approach.
