Germany accused China on Wednesday of planning an espionage breach on the Federal Cartography Agency in 2021. Berlin received a protest call from Beijing’s envoy.

China was charged on Wednesday by Germany with orchestrating an espionage hack on the Federal Cartography Agency in 2021. Beijing’s ambassador was called to Berlin to register a protest. A request for comment was not immediately answered by China’s foreign ministry. Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said in a statement, “We call on China to refrain from and to prevent such cyberattacks,” adding that the episode had demonstrated the seriousness of the threat that such attacks currently constitute.

Based on information from its intelligence services, the German government was able to identify Chinese state actors as the culprits behind the cyberattack, according to a ministry statement. It further stated that the hackers had access to both private and business endpoints. According to the statement, the German agency for cartography and geodesy (BKG) is crucial to several public and private enterprises, particularly those engaged in vital infrastructure projects.

According to the ministry, security services anticipate that China will step up its state-run espionage operations even further. In Germany and other Western nations, tensions regarding Chinese espionage have escalated recently, especially in the wake of the widely publicized arrest of an aide to the European Parliament in April. “We are therefore resolutely countering these threats and have significantly increased our protection,” Faeser stated.
