In a phone conversation with Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday, Chinese President Xi Jinping talked about enhancing collaboration with the United Kingdom in the areas of finance, the green economy, and artificial intelligence.

In the call, which China said Britain had requested, the Chinese leader also congratulated Starmer on his Labour Party’s victory in the July election.

London did not provide an instant confirmation or more general statement.

In order to comprehend and address the opportunities and problems Beijing presents, Starmer’s administration announced in June that it will conduct an audit of the United Kingdom’s relations with China.

During the tenure of Britain’s previous Conservative government, tensions arose between the two nations over Hong Kong, British charges of rights violations, and worries about Chinese companies providing vital infrastructure.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who held the position prior to him, announced in 2022 that the “golden era” of ties was coming to an end. David Cameron had supported this notion.

Xi told Starmer he hoped “the British side will look at China objectively and rationally.”

Xi added that “China is ready to engage the United Kingdom in dialogue on an equal footing, on the basis of mutual respect… (to) enhance understanding and mutual trust.”

The Chinese leader added that he saw scope to “expand cooperation in finance, the green economy, and artificial intelligence,” the report added.
