198 Chinese men were taken into custody by Sri Lankan authorities on suspicion of running a cybercrime ring out of the country, according to a police official.
During searches conducted since October 6, these Chinese men were apprehended at four sites, according to Deputy Inspector-General Nihal Thalduwa. On Saturday, 129 people were seized at one of the locations.
According to Thalduwa, numerous laptop computers and cell phones were also taken into custody.
“We suspect that they were operating online scams from these locations,” Thalduwa told reporters in Colombo. “Their victims include people in Sri Lanka as well as those overseas.”
Speaking with the suspect in a foreign language was causing the investigations to proceed slowly, he claimed.
Additionally, authorities have asked the Chinese Embassy in Colombo for assistance.
He stated that forensic specialists were examining the electronic gadgets.
Another 200 people, mostly Indians, were detained by police in June on suspicion of running internet money schemes.
According to Thalduwa, the suspects had come to the island as visitors and were, for the most part, overstaying their visas.
