CIOs need to be business champions and not just technology specialists, says Vivek Verma, Group CIO at Diarough NV

The adoption of technology can only be successful through teamwork right from the conceptualization, evaluation, and post-roll-out

When asked how he planned his career path to be a successful Group CIO, Vivek Verma, Group Chief Information Officer (CIO) at Diarough NV, in an exclusive interview with CIO News, said, it just happened, I had an eagerness and interest to learn advance/new technologies which provided me a solid platform to develop skills and competence to be a preferred business partner. Another thing that I learned was to understand the business I worked for, and the mind-set to always work as a business partner. These two things laid the foundation to be a successful Group CIO at the early stage of my career.

When asked about challenges he faced in his career path and how he overcame them, he said, the prominent challenge I faced throughout my career is technology adoption. The adoption of technology can only be successful through teamwork right from the conceptualization, evaluation, and post-roll-out. The other important one is building and driving a culture of innovation, excellence, change, and growth. The approach is to be a respectable and trusted leader followed by crafting a strategy that aligns well with the business’ short-term and long-term goals. Next comes is forming a team by cherry-picking champions, ambassadors, and business partners.

When asked about challenges faced by CIOs today while implementing digital technologies, he said, there are two that include “resistance to change” and “fear of failure”. The business environment is steadily becoming more competitive and agile. This environment strongly depends on technology. In other words, technology has to be at the core to drive business.

The expectation on timelines is unrealistic at times, and the Technology Product and services offerings have many options right from Start-ups to well-established brands. In today’s time, the major challenge faced by CIOs in driving Digital transformation is to balance and navigate through this triangle.

When asked how CIOs can overcome the challenges faced, he said:

  • The right understanding of business and business processes
  • Align tech initiatives in line with the business strategies
  • Need to have skilled resources and support partners

When asked about best practices/industry trends/advice he would like to suggest to fellow CIOs for their successful professional journey, he said, CIOs need to be business champions and not just technology specialists and focused on the right tech choice to provide business solutions. Believe in teamwork “Teams work, always works”.
