Union minister Manohar Lal officially opened the Computer Security Incident Response Team-Power (CSIRT-Power) at the Northern Regional Power Committee in New Delhi, marking a major step toward protecting India’s vital power system. The establishment of the facility is a deliberate reaction to the increasing danger of cyberattacks, which endanger the country’s power industry and have been identified as a primary target because of its crucial position in the nation’s infrastructure.
During the inauguration, Manohar Lal underscored the evolving nature of cyber threats, which have become a national security concern. “Cyberattacks today are capable of causing significant disruptions with far-reaching consequences. The CSIRT-Power is our proactive response to defend our power systems against such evolving threats,” he stated.
The launch of CSIRT-Power coincides with a critical period of digital transition in the power industry, increasing attack surface and vulnerabilities.
It was discovered that insufficient funding, manpower, and legal authority prevented the sub-sectoral Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) from adequately responding to advanced cyberthreats. CSIRT-Power seeks to close this disparity.
This project was started by the Ministry of Power and CERT-In in accordance with the National Cyber Security Policy of 2013 as a part of their 100-day action plan to create a specialized incident response team outfitted with cutting-edge infrastructure and cybersecurity capabilities. This facility will coordinate response to incidents, create a strong cybersecurity framework, and put important policies into place to improve the industry’s overall readiness and resilience.
“The CSIRT-Power is more than just a facility; it is a fortress built to protect our power systems from the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats,” explained Shri Manohar Lal. As the hub for cybersecurity in the electricity industry, the center will guarantee a timely and well-coordinated reaction to cyber incidents and threats.
The center’s other duties include strengthening cybersecurity resilience through a methodical approach that involves gathering, evaluating, and disseminating data on industry-specific cyberthreats, putting proactive cybersecurity awareness-raising measures into place, and bolstering the power sector’s overall cybersecurity posture.
The facility also seeks to support industry-specific security policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and best practices in addition to offering member utilities cybersecurity support and expertise.
CSIRT-Power will improve cybersecurity measures everywhere by working with schools and businesses, as well as by implementing capacity-building strategies like training, standardization, and incident response exercises.
