Sibanye-Stillwater’s (SSWJ) primary mining and processing sector announced on Thursday that a cyberattack on its IT system, which started on Monday morning, has very marginally interfered with its global operations.
The main mining and processing division of Sibanye-Stillwater (SSWJ) reported on Thursday that a cyberattack on its IT system that began Monday morning had very slightly disrupted its worldwide operations. The precious metals manufacturer in Johannesburg claimed that by “proactively isolating” the IT system, it had been able to secure its data and that an inquiry into the attack was underway. According to James Wellsted, a corporate representative, the attack shut down the company’s server and interrupted the system globally. Sibanye contacted outside experts to help identify the breach and restore the system.
“Our global IT infrastructure has been impacted since Monday morning; some things are working, some are not,” he stated. “We are still trying to identify what’s behind the attack.” According to Wellsted, the business is still unsure of the attacker’s identity and has not received any payment requests. Sibanye mines gold and platinum in South Africa, his native nation. It also has zinc, nickel, and lithium projects in Finland, France, and Australia, in addition to running a palladium mine in Montana, USA.
“Our efforts remain focused on working towards the full remediation of the effects of this attack,” the business stated.
