Cybercrime in Telangana increased significantly in 2024, rising 43.33% over the previous year, according to the police department’s annual report, which Director General of Police Jitender issued on Sunday, December 29. In 2024, the state reported 25,184 incidents of cybercrime, a dramatic increase from 17,571 cases in 2023.
Overall cognizable crimes increased by 22.53% from 1,38,312 instances in 2023 to 1,69,477 cases in 2024, reflecting this pattern of escalating crime. The survey noted a rise in a number of crime categories, such as robberies, burglaries, cheating, rapes, and murders.
The police agency highlighted its achievements in fighting financial fraud, even in the face of the rise in cybercrime. In 2024, victims received a refund of Rs 180 crore, a substantial 2,060% increase over the Rs 8 crore that was recovered in 2023. Furthermore, compared to Rs 128 crore the year before, Rs 247 crore was frozen in 2024. In addition, the police blacklisted 1,825 URLs and domains linked to cybercriminals, 14,984 SIM cards, and 9,811 IMEI numbers.
Jitender emphasized how well the state’s law and order policies worked, citing the successful suppression of violent crimes and the operations of terror, Maoist, and sectarian organizations. According to his assessment, Maoist activity were mainly limited, with 24 guns being seized and 14 fanatics neutralized during four gunfights. One member of the CPI (Maoist) Special Zonal Committee, one member of the State Committee, and one secretary of the State Committee of the CPI (ML) ND were among the 85 radicals who were taken into custody. Forty-one radicals gave up.
The government’s commitment to fighting drug trafficking was also underlined by the DGP, who said Telangana wants to become a “zero drug availability state.” In this endeavor, the Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) was instrumental, recording 1,942 drug cases, making 4,682 arrests, and confiscating narcotics valued at Rs 142.95 crore. The Competent Authority (SAFEMA) granted the TGANB freezing orders for properties valued at Rs 55.8 crore belonging to defendants in 10 NDPS Act proceedings; 122 more cases are still pending.
The seamless transition to the new criminal law system, which went into force on July 1, 2024, was also mentioned in the study. Under the new legislation, Telangana was the first state to produce a digitally signed copy of the FIR. Under the new criminal rules, 85,190 cases have been filed as of November 30, 2024, with notable concentrations in Hyderabad (10,501), Rachakonda (10,271), and Cyberabad (15,360). The new criminal legislation resulted in 1,313 zero FIRs.
