The Cyber Crime Cell has alerted the public against “digital arrest” scams, in which con artists pose as representatives of the CBI, RBI, or Narcotics Bureau in order to demand money.
Scammers use audio or video calls to scare victims by making bogus accusations that they are involved in money laundering or drug trafficking. They maintain victims under observation by using Skype and phony arrest warrants or paperwork to look legitimate.
Some con artists work out of facilities that are set up to seem like official buildings, replete with phony uniforms. In some instances, they demand hefty payments to settle the matter after claiming a victim’s friend or relative has been imprisoned for criminal offenses. Threats of legal action are used to compel payments ranging from millions to crores.
People are advised by the cyber cell not to divulge personal information or make payments based on such promises. Reporting suspicious calls to the police or a cybercrime hotline should happen right away. In order to stop more abuse, officials advise that bank accounts be secured as soon as possible.
The authorities warned that in order to counteract these frauds, vigilance and timely reporting are crucial.
