A charge has been filed at the CEN police station regarding an instance of defrauding wherein an individual posing as a cybercrime branch official deceived a man out of Rs 35 lac.

The victim got a call at home on September 24 from someone posing as Kartik Sharma from the Mumbai DHL courier service.

The caller stated, “A parcel containing illegal narcotics has arrived under your name, intended for shipment to Taiwan, and has been confiscated by the Mumbai cybercrime branch.” He then provided a number, 9957376759, for the victim to call and speak with cybercrime officers.

When the victim called the number, the person on the other end introduced himself as Pranesh Gupta, an officer of the cybercrime branch. During a video call, he warned the victim, “Your name has appeared in an international drug case, and we will arrest you. We will let go of the case if you pay money.”

Fearing for his life, the victim deposited Rs 35 lakhs into the fake account. After realizing he had been duped, the victim reported the incident to the CEN police.
