The Rachakonda cybercrime police returned Rs 70,01,788 to a 65-year-old woman from Uppal, Hyderabad, who had been the victim of a complex cyber fraud, following a two-week ordeal. The woman was contacted over WhatsApp on December 8 by a person claiming to be Mohit Sharma, an officer with the Mumbai Crime Branch.
She was told by the scammer that her SIM card was being used for unlawful purposes, such as harassing people and disseminating pornographic material. He said that in order to look genuine, she gave a fictitious office address and her name was included in 24 complaints connected to a scammer named Naresh Goyal.
The fraudster used persuasion and terror to force her to divulge personal information and asked that she transfer `1.58 crore from her savings in order to stay out of legal hot water. He threatened to tell no one about the incident, further intimidating her.
But on December 23, the woman realized she had been duped after reading a news report regarding digital arrests. She went to the LB Nagar cybercrime police the following day, and they promptly filed a complaint and froze Rs 72 lakh of the money that had been moved. The police expedited the process by filing a petition right away, which resulted in the victim receiving their money back.
