City police nabbed six people on Wednesday after busting a cybercrime ring operating out of an apartment disguised as a contact centre in Sundarpada. A preliminary investigation found that the cyber racket was operating by installing multiple SIM box-like devices.

“On inspection of the flat, it was found that the call centre was a fake one. Our team raided the place.” The team found that six persons were using laptops and mobile phones and calling and receiving calls from the US,” said DCP Pinak Mishra. They detained Sameer Mobin, 26, Md Javed Hussain, 26, Md Tosif, 23, Alam, 24, Sueb Raza, 22, and Md Haider Ali, 34; all of them are from Kolkata.

According to the police, the cyber fraudsters employed e-mail bombardment to conduct phishing using Notron and MACAFEE (anti-virus software). They sent emails to antivirus subscribers while impersonating as MACAFEE and Nortron customer service representatives. When a customer dials the toll-free number and receives the call, it is routed to Skype and Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP). Then they gain remote access by gaining control of the system and its data, including the DCP.

Police seized six laptop computers, 11 mobile phones, and other documents and supplies such as fibre cables, WiFi setup, routers, and towers. They have been charged under sections 318(4), 319(2), 336(2), 336(3), 340(2), 338, 61(2), 111(2) (b) of the BNS Act, and sections 66(C), 66(D) of the IT Act.
