Under the guise of Mumbai Cybercrime Branch agents, cybercriminals defrauded a 32-year-old city private employee out of Rs 2.9 lakh.
Via an IVRS system, the victim had been contacted automatically by someone posing as the Mumbai Cyber Crime Branch. He was notified by the caller that the victim’s name had been used in questionable money laundering transactions. The scammer then claimed in a video chat on WhatsApp that several accounts had been opened in the victim’s name at the Mumbai Bandra Kurla Branch.
Additionally, the fraudster claimed that 25 shady accounts were opened in India using the victim’s name, and that one of these accounts was credited with a total of Rs 25 lakh.
According to cybercrime officials, the scammer demanded that if the victim sent money, they could confirm the transactions and, if the money wasn’t his, the money would be returned within 15 minutes.
“The fraudster warned that this was a highly confidential matter involving several influential individuals, including bank managers, politicians, and police officers. They claimed a “truth test” was necessary to lift an arrest warrant allegedly issued against the victim,” officials said.
An ID card, a copy of the arrest warrant, and an acknowledgement letter allegedly from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Mumbai Crime Branch were among the materials the scammer sent. The victim made purchases under duress.
The scammer promised the victim that the arrest order would be canceled if these transactions were completed. But they cautioned him not telling anyone about it.
The funds were never refunded to the victim’s account in spite of the guarantees.
The cybercrime police opened an investigation and filed a case after receiving a complaint.
