Portugal path used by cybercriminals to trick INCOIS of 40 lakhs

The most recent victim of cybercrime is the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), an independent organization operating under the Union Ministry of Earth Sciences was defrauded out of more than 40 lakhs.

INCOIS, a Nizampet-based company, ordered spare parts from a Finland-based company and started the payment process through a bank. But when the Finnish company noticed unpaid invoices for the spare parts delivery, INCOIS discovered it had been conned since the money had been transferred to a different account in Portugal.

The investigation was taken up by Cyberabad Cybercrime Wing after a report was received from INCOIS authorities. Senior police authorities believe that the scammers used a counterfeit email to deceive INCOIS, causing them to lose 40 lakhs.

According to the police, in March, INCOIS sent a purchase order to the Finnish company Vaisala Oyj for the delivery of 300 Radiosonde units, which measure and transmit meteorological data for a total of 49,940 euros. In response to a June request from Vaisala Oyj, INCOIS wrote to the Canara Bank branch in Pragathi Nagar, requesting that the funds be transferred to Vaisala Oyj.

Following the reported transfer, Ujivan verified that the payment had been received, and the bank issued a receipt for the same.

Vaisala Oyj, however, contacted INCOIS again on August 27, stating that the payment was past due for seventy days and inquiring as to the status of the payment. After verification, INCOIS discovered that the monies had been credited to another unapproved bank due to imposters having compromised the channels of communication between INCOIS, bankers, and vendors.

Subsequent investigations showed that the payment was credited to an account in a different Portuguese bank than the one used by Vaisala Oyj.

Police advised users to exercise extra caution while starting transactions or authorizing banks to make payments. “The case is being probed,” an official declared.
